Chapter 25

Justin strode over and handed me a small vial filled with murky green liquid. “Drink this. It’ll stop them from being able to follow us.”

I curled my fingers over the glass, trying to avoid looking at the contents in case I saw something inside that would make me want to be sick. You never knew what the ingredients were when it came to witchcraft. “Where to from here?”

“Drink up, and then we’ll fly out of the city.”

“Won’t the humans see us?”

“That’s where I come in.” Marcus opened his vial and downed the contents, screwing up his face in the process. “The clouds can cover our departure.”

I opened my vial, and no matter how much I tried, I couldn’t stop myself from looking at the murky liquid inside. Thankfully, I couldn’t see any eyes staring back at me, but fear still ate away inside my stomach because the last time I drank something of Mava’s, I ended up almost dead and left Marcus in a world of pain. I prayed this wasn’t going to be another one of her tricks.

I shook my head. Of course it wasn’t. Mava had done everything for Marcus and me, and I couldn’t let a little thing like fear get in the way of our mission.

Resting the vial against my lips, I tilted it up and drank the potion. I almost gagged as the mixture slipped over my tongue. It was so much worse than the previous potion she’d given me, and I tried my hardest not to think about the ingredients that had probably gone into the concoction.

Holding the empty vial I looked around the rooftop. “Where’s Abby?”

“Over here,” she yelled.

I twisted around in Marcus’s direction but couldn’t see her.

A few moments later, she came around the side of the stairwell entry, carrying a massive air conditioning unit as if it were a giant balloon. That girl was a force to be reckoned with.

She dropped it beside Marcus then pushed it across the door, blocking it so that Marcus no longer had to.

Abby dusted off her hands. “You ready?”

“Don’t you and Justin have to take your potions?” I asked.

“We already took ours while we were waiting for you.”

“Right,” I said.

Marcus peered up at the dark clouds rolling in. It looked as if the storm of the century was about to let loose, but the storm was us, not Mother Nature.

Justin adjusted the strap on his backpack, which was sitting flush against his chest. “We better get going. We need to put as much distance between us and Sydney before the spell runs out.”

I raised a brow. “It runs out?” I wanted to slap myself for being so naïve. Nothing lasted forever. If it did, I certainly wouldn’t remember who I was, and I was thankful the spell placed on me had started to wane when it had.

“It should give us about a day or two, and then we’ll need to make our own unless we manage to rescue Mava and Astrid before the spell runs out.
